About Us

Today the group has 77 members most women and 8 men aged between 70 and 103. Several have been with Stockwell Good Neighbours since its very beginning.

The group usually meet on a Monday and for twenty-five years were meeting at the Oval house theatre who supported the group with the use of their premises for all of those years. They are currently awaiting a new building in Coldharbour Lane Brixton where we hope to join them so have been meeting in Brixton library Windrush square since January until the Pandemic Covid Virus caused the group to suspend meeting. The group is a lively vibrant gathering of elders who take part in a wide range of activities to help reduce isolation and loneliness and promote health and wellbeing. They enjoy, Tai Chi, outings, celebrations, reminiscence, games and craft workshops.

The group normally meets between 10.30 and 2pm and is led by the Coordinator Lesley Allen with over 30 years of experience working in the NHS and third party sector as a general and mental health nurse who is also a Dementia Champion, she is supported by a dedicated team of volunteers and a committee where several of the members sit on.

Members pay £5 a week which covers a light lunch, tea and coffee a game of bingo and a raffle ticket and Tai Chi.

Through lunches and activities we aim to:

  • Reduce isolation and loneliness
  • Improve health and wellbeing
  • Empower older people, maximise independence and improve self-esteem

  1. Hi Leslie,

I am Ruby Powell’s son and I want to say that I am so pleased this worthwhile club exists to provide this generation of pioneers with valuable activities they can pursue in their retirement. My mother says you are at the helm of this wonderful charity and I wanted to say thank you! If there is anything I can do to help, I will be happy to assist.

    Regards

    Clive Powell
